14 Perfect Songs for Summer

Summer just ain’t too fun without the right music. Here’s some of my favourite songs for summer chillin’.

1. Jess Glynne – Ain’t Got Far To Go

Jess Glynne is one of my all-time favourite performers without a single ounce of doubt. Her voice has a very distinct tone to it that makes it very easy to identify. She’s got a lot of amazing songs under her belt but this one in particular might be my favourite among them.

2. Pitbul – Options ft. Stephen Marley

In his 10th album, Climate Change, Pitbull put out this amazing song featuring Stephen Marley. For this song, Pitbull flew over to Jamaica to collab with Stephen and, among other things, also visit Bob Marley’s old recording studio.

3. Tarrus Riley – Simple Blessings ft. Konshens

With a focus on the importance of the simple things in life, this one’s for the records. I’m in love with the message this song has and you probably will be too. Though, it may be a little hard to understand some parts of the song if you’re not used to Caribbean music. Click this link if you want the lyrics for this song.

4. Aloe Blacc – Brooklyn In The Summer

This song from Aloe Blacc is definitely going to be on repeat for me. It’s a very light and fun song that’s filled with a ton of imagery.

5. Nailah Blackman & Shenseea – “Badishh”

I’m gonna be honest and tell you that I’ve probably replayed this song at least 50 times in a matter of 24 hours. This song by Nailah Blackman and Shenseea is one many reasons why I, someone who once had no relation at all to Caribbean music, has fallen in love with it.

6. Ben Rector – Old Friends

Ahhh old friends… Don’t we all wish we could turn time back?

7. Seinabo Sey – Younger

This is one of those songs that’s kinda borderline sad but also borderline uplifting. I used to shower, change, and brush my teeth to this song when it came out in 2014. Even to this day, it remains a fantastic song with a message that only gets clearer as I grow older.

8. Nick Jonas – Bacon ft. Ty Dolla $ign

Honestly, Bacon? ‘Nuff said.

9. Cardi B, Bad Bunny & J Balvin – I Like It

Everytime I hear this song, I just wanna grab my dog and start dance with him as I sing along —

“They call me Cardi Bardi, banging body

Spicy mami, hot tamale

Hotter than a Somali, fur coat, Ferrari”.

10. Jidenna – Boomerang

The first time I heard this song, I was on the way home from a camping trip in Banff with some friends. It’s one of those songs that really just “pops” and makes you do a double take. At least, it did for me. I was listening to completely different song with my headphones on when this song started blasting through the car’s speakers. The moment it came on, I chucked my headphones aside and started jamming out to this vibey song.

11. Erphaan Alves – Overdue

Another Caribbean song that I can’t get over is this song that I guess is also considered a love song while being quite uplifting. Well done, Erphaan. Someone take me to meet some Caribbean musicians!

12. KWAYE – Sweetest Life

This one’s got beach vibes written all over it for me. I can just imagine myself sitting on a recliner at the beach with a coconut in hand. Also, KWAYE’s dancing in the video makes for a very entertaining watch.

13. Bernhoft – C’mon Talk

Alongside Reggie Watts, Bernhoft is one of my favourite artists that utilizes loop pedals in ther music.

14. Vennu Mallesh – It’s My Life What Ever I Wanna Do

You might be asking why I included this song onto this list so, to you, I’ll say “It’s My Life What Ever I Wanna Do”.

An amazing extra:

James Hill – Voodoo Child (Hendrix Ukulele Cover)
